CEREMONIES.

On 22nd September, 1930, H.E. the Governor presided at the ceremony of the unveiling of the Portrait of Sir Cecil Clementi. The portrait is the gift of Sir Cecil Clementi's Chinese friends and admirers in Hong Kong. The Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotewall, C.M.G., LL.D., on behalf of the subscribers, asked His Excellency to unveil the portrait which is hung in a central position in the Great Hall.

On the same day His Excellency the Chancellor formally opened the new Biological building. The provision of an ade- quate biological laboratory in a separate building was made possible by the generosity of Mr. Kwok Siu Lau who gave the University $50,000 which it was decided to devote to the labora- tory.

On the 3rd October, 1930, H.H. Prince Purachatra of Siam visited the University.

On the 21st October, 1930, H.E. the Governor and Lady Peel attended a reception given in their honour in the Great Hall, by the University Union.

On 31st December, 1930, there were 336 students on the rolls of the University distributed as shown below:-

An interesting feature is the gradual revival of the popularity of the Engineering Faculty. The numbers of students in this Faculty has risen steadily from 54 in 1928 to 92 in January 1931.

Forty-one members of the University were presented for Bachelor degrees at the Congregation held in January 1931. Of these 19 were from the Medical Faculty, 9 from the Engineering Faculty and 13 from the Faculty of Arts.

Of the Engineering graduates, Mr. Pao Yue Lum was award- ed 1st Class Honours by the London University Assessors and Mr. Koh Nye Poh, 2nd Class Honours.

Dr. Yeoh Kok Cheang, M.B., B.S. (Hong Kong), D.P.H (Camb.), D.T.M. & H. (Eng.), was granted the degree of Doctor of Medicine.

The Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on the Hon. Foo Ping-sheung, B.Sc., one of the University's earliest graduates in Engineering and now a high official of the Govern- ment of China.

HONG KONG UNIVERSITY GRADUATES ASSOCIATION.

At a meeting held in the Great Hall of the University on the 14th January, 1931, certain graduates decided to form The Hong Kong University Graduates' Association." The Hon. Foo Ping-sheung, LL.D., B.SC., was elected the Association's first President.

THE TANG CHI NGONG BUILDING.

During the year the construction of a separate building for Chinese was taken in hand. The building is situated on the University estate near 'Haldon and is estimated to cost, with furniture and equipment, $60,000 the whole of which was gen- erously provided by Mr. Tang Chi Ngong after whom the build- ing will be named.

THE CHATER CLOCK.

During the year the Chater Clock was duly installed in the central University Tower.

THE WOMEN'S HOSTEL.

The Warden of St. Stephen's Hall reports that the building fund has risen from $20,000 to $30,000 owing to the efforts of the students and to the generosity of western friends in Hong Kong and in England.

CAREERS FOR STUDENTS.

Mr. H. Braga, B.Sc. (Eng.), was during 1930 appointed as an Apprentice Engineer in the P.W.D. This is the first appoint- ment under a scheme which is designed to absorb annually in the local Public Works Department at least one graduate in Engineering. Shortly after the close of the year under review Mr. E. Wong Tape was given a similar appointment.

FINANCE.

The outstanding event of the year under review was the increase of the Government annual grant to the University from
